We started by vaccinating two horses for AHS, time is running out to vaccinate your horses so do yours before end of November.
We received a complaint of a brown horse standing in a small camp in the township near Fairview Race course. After going to investigate, we found and met with the owner of the horse. He had purchased the horse from King Williamstown. There was food and water available when we arrived but no shelter from the sun/ rain and no space to move like a Thoroughbred should. The owner is a groom at Fairview and he says he ‘knows’ horses. We said that’s all good and well but he needs a shelter and a bigger grass camp with water and food available at lib. We visited again the following week and a new bigger camp and shelter had been erected like we asked so for now the horse is ok, but does that land not belong to Fairview Race course? This could be very problematic for the Fairview racing industry as who will now have to oversee all the horse’s vaccinations??
A recheck on six crossbreeds and 4t - ok
One of the Uitenhage donkeys gave birth, a surprise to all! Welcome to the world little one:)
A complaint from Pedi of a horse with a tether around its neck. Please check the by laws guys before you go untying animals…
The paint pony with cancer under her tail was sent to Jesus. Rest In Peace sweet girl..no more pain..
The complaint of a stallion breaking out of a truck yard, was gelded and paid for by this handsome boy’s owner. Hopefully ‘Go Slow’ will go slower now ;) Especially after we bring him one very lonely donkey as a companion. Rocco has also been gelded recently and was brought in after he started roaming looking for friends as he was all alone on the farm where he was. Both will be very happy to have each other’s company now that their hormones have settled properly. The horse is also being kept in a nice big grassy camp and no longer in the ‘yard’ where the trucks are. Very approachable and cooperative owner. Such a pleasure to work with you Elija :)
Another six horses vaccinated for AHS. Also recheck on horses looking better, bar one.
Then a request for assistance with six newly acquired donkeys. We visited, dewormed all 6 and treated an ugly injury on one of the Jenny’s legs. Thankfully only a superficial wound. We then went back 3 weeks later to treat for ticks and external parasites – A lovely shelter has beenerected for them as well and flytraps hung. These donkeys are definitely now good to go.. well after the two little colts are gelded – Early December should be time for them..
An exicting property check for one of our special youngsters. Property good, Test ride good. To be delivered early November – But who will they choose as a companion for her??
Recheck on 9ts and 11 cross breeds – Good
Dewormed 2donks and 3 cross breeds
Then a lovely little surprise just before home time. Alfred found an abandoned baby mongoose at the Unit. We were so excited it was the cutest thing man! Anyway phoned Arnold Slabbert to come and do his thing, for a big burly man, Arnold was very taken aback and quite childlike with the little tcritter, we almost thought he was going to kiss it for a moment J Only to find out he has a very soft spot for mongi/gooses..;)
Then we have the irate case of a man, whom after we phoned him re an underweight TB, decided to panic and try give away / sell all his equines. After doing a bit of investigating it was found that a ‘trainer’ living next door to him, apparently gave him this 17hh Tb as a gift. Angry Face L Now firstly why would a trainer, who knows how complex and costly Tb s are to keep, give a man a Tb that knows nothing about horses, let alone Tbs..Then you could say, yes but if they are living next door surely they could keep an eye on him? Same thing we thought.. After asking the ‘trainer’ the same question it was advised they did help for the first two years then couldn’t see the horse again so they didn’t know it had lost weight... and yes if you ‘GIVE’ a horse away, whether its 4 days or four years ago, it IS STILL your responsibility to know and check on the horse, It’s the least you can do..
A recheck on 6 donkeys resulted in a date made for deworming, as a little under..
Carli, Jack and Juan Marie from SPCA Uitenhage took a day to do the rounds in kwanobuhle and Langa to the known donkey cart owners. They ended up only meeting with two owners, whereby and exchange of old harnessing and old bit took place. All and all 8 donkeys seen, 4 dewormed and two pregnant Jennies brought in as strays. We found the strays next to a shabine, some were even hiding in a container filled with rubbish. Shame poor kids. Anyway two less donkeys in the township. SEE PHOTOS: Strays and bit replacement

HUMANSDORP OUTREACH
Carli and Jack have been busy this month, they went out to deworm and assess the horses in humansdorp. Thank you to Freek and PJ for facilitating and helping on the day. They managed to deworm 30 + crossbreeds in relatively acceptable condition, one even improving since the last time we saw her. There was however a problem mare in town on their way out. The mare was clearly old, with hardly any teeth left and lame on her near fore. Staff treated how they could , dewormed and advised the best thing to do would be to send to God. However after checking in a few days later the horse was found to be walking much easier. We will however still work on the owner to surrender or euth. . Now just Noupoort outreach before the end of the year to organise...Please if you have any 2nd hand bits, numnahs or halters to donate we would really appreciate X
Received another complaint against a well- known touch farm, re their two older donkeys and that ‘the bone on legs were exposed.’ Upon Inspection, the two donkeys in question, as well as three ponies were found to be in acceptable condition. The ‘bone” that was supposedly exposed was not found just severe fly strike, which we are all battling with atm, especially those with donkeys. All the relevant treatment was being done and the overseeing vet was contacted to put the complainant at ease. We have had a good relationship with this Touch farm establishment for many years and are always met with open arms on our inspections, accepting our recommendations and visits with no resistance. BUT ALSO, Why pay an establishment if you think they are neglecting their animals? Why not speak to management about your discrepancies and ask for your money back if you feel it is going toward abuse and neglect of animals.. Not this one but SOME establishments do deserve that!
A request to return two horses that were adopted from us, as the cost is getting too high.. Thank you for doing the right thing Pieter. Ganicus and Kai will be looking for a home as soon as they have adjusted and ready to go. Welcome back sweet kids..
Another 6 horses vaccinated against AHS and 4horses dewormed.
Recheck on one cross and one donkey - good
Recheck on moderate looking Tbs .. keeping an eye..
Our Little Duncan was not so happily delivered to his new home, only because his mom wasn’t’ going with. Yes it is sad for a moment but we have noticed the moms are far more happy to be rid of their little colts than they are their fillies ;) Go well D, your new girlfriend will settle too, promise X
A complaint of a certain trainer trying to give away a two year old mare with injury on face book. After eventually getting through to the man his back was already up with all the commotion on fb and apparently the mare has gone to be a brood mare somewhere according to him. Please guys if you see posts you are concerned about on Fb rather don’t post on social media what the problem is but come to us first with all the relevant information or else they can get scared off and start hiding things.
Lastly , Good luck with the flies!!
Till Next Time
